What does the Keep Right Sign mean?
The keep right sign means you must move to the right side of the dividing feature ahead, such as a median island, a traffic island, a pylon row, or a lane separator. What to do when you see it
Stay to the right of the object or island indicated by the sign. Do not attempt to pass on the left side. At a divided road median opening, the keep right sign directs you to the right lane of the opening. Follow the direction of the sign and check for signs on the other side of the island to confirm the intended direction.
Where you'll see it in Ontario
Keep right signs are posted on median islands in the centre of divided roads, at traffic circles and roundabouts, on lane separation barriers, on concrete dividers at tunnel entrances, and at complex intersections where drivers might otherwise choose either side of a divider.
G1 test relevance
The G1 test may present a road scene with a keep right sign on a median or island and ask candidates what action the driver must take. The answer is always to pass to the right of the sign. This tests whether candidates understand that these signs are directional commands, not advisory.
Common mistakes drivers make
Passing on the wrong side of a median island because the driver did not notice the keep right sign is the most common error. At night or in poor visibility, these signs can be easy to miss, especially on unfamiliar roads.
