How to Get Your Driver's License in Ontario

A step-by-step guide for new Ontario drivers

1

Pass the G1 Knowledge Test

Study the Ontario Driver's Handbook and pass the written G1 knowledge test at a ServiceOntario or DriveTest centre. You must be at least 16 years old. Nearby DriveTest locations include Downsview, Newmarket, and Etobicoke.

2

Complete Driver Education

Enroll in an MTO-approved BDE program like SafePass to reduce your G1 waiting period from 12 to 8 months and qualify for insurance discounts. This is especially valuable for driving in busy Vaughan, York Region, and Toronto traffic.

3

Practice Driving with G1 License

Practice driving with a fully licensed driver (4+ years experience, 0.05% BAC or less) in the front passenger seat. Get experience on Ontario roads including residential areas, main streets, and 400-series highways.

4

Pass the G2 Road Test

After 8-12 months with your G1, take the G2 road test at a DriveTest centre like Downsview or Port Union to earn your G2 license, which allows you to drive alone in Ontario.

5

Pass the G Road Test

After 12 months with your G2, pass the G road test (includes highway driving on 400-series highways) to obtain your full G license.
