G2 and G Road Test Prep Checklist

The same checklist Nadi gives his own students. Print it or save it as a PDF and tick items off as you go.

One week before

  • Confirm your appointment time and that your G1 is still valid (not expired or under suspension).
  • Sleep on a regular schedule. Don't cram driving practice the day before, fatigue is what hurts most students.
  • Drive your actual test centre route at least once with an instructor or supervisor.
  • Practice the maneuvers you've struggled with most. Parallel parking, three point turn, lane changes on busy roads.
  • Service the test car. Lights, signals, brakes, tires, washer fluid, working seatbelts, valid plate sticker.

The day before

  • Drive your test route at the same time of day as your appointment so traffic patterns match.
  • Review hand signals. They are still on the test even though they are rare in real life.
  • Charge your phone, double check your appointment time and centre address.
  • Lay out your documents tonight: G1 licence, glasses if you wear them, payment, and the test car's insurance and ownership.
  • Get to bed by 10pm. Sleep is the cheapest performance boost on test day.

The day of

  • Eat a real breakfast. Hydrate but don't over caffeinate.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early so you have time to check in, breathe, and walk through pre-drive checks.
  • Bring G1 licence, glasses or contacts if needed, the test car's insurance and ownership, and payment.
  • Pre-drive checks before pulling out: mirrors, seat, lights, signals, parking brake, fuel level.
  • Take three slow breaths before the examiner gets in. The first 30 seconds set the tone for the entire test.

During the test

  • Smooth driving beats fast driving. Examiners score for control, not speed.
  • Check both shoulder and mirror before every lane change. They are watching for the head turn.
  • Full stop at every stop sign. Count one full second before moving.
  • Stay at or under the posted speed. Even one or two over costs marks.
  • Signal early on every turn and every lane change, not just the big ones.
  • If you don't catch an instruction, ask the examiner to repeat it. They prefer that to guessing.

Automatic fails

Any one of these ends the test on the spot. Memorize them.

  • Rolling through a stop sign or red light
  • Failing to check the blind spot before changing lanes
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road or in the wrong lane
  • Speeding by more than 10 km/h over the limit
  • Failing to yield where the right of way is required
  • Striking a curb or another vehicle, even lightly
  • Causing the examiner to use the brake or take the wheel
