How Many In-Car Lessons Do I Need?

Most new drivers in Ontario need between 10 and 20 hours of professional in-car instruction to be ready for their G2 road test. The BDE program requires a minimum of 10 in-car hours, but students who supplement those with extra lessons and private practice typically feel more prepared and pass on their first attempt.

Key Facts

  • 10 hours: sufficient for students who practice regularly and pick up skills quickly
  • 15 hours: the common recommendation for most students with average experience
  • 20+ hours: recommended for anxious drivers, students with very limited practice time, or those preparing for complex test routes
  • How much private practice you get between lessons (more practice = fewer lessons needed)
  • Whether you have any prior driving experience (e.g., driving in another country)

The BDE Minimum: 10 Hours

If you are enrolled in the BDE program, the MTO requires a minimum of 10 hours of in-car instruction. For many students, 10 hours is enough to pass the G2 road test if they also practice regularly with a supervising driver between lessons. But 10 hours is a floor, not a recommendation for every student.

How Many Most Students Actually Need

Based on what driving instructors consistently observe, the realistic range is wider than the MTO minimum.

  • 10 hours: sufficient for students who practice regularly and pick up skills quickly
  • 15 hours: the common recommendation for most students with average experience
  • 20+ hours: recommended for anxious drivers, students with very limited practice time, or those preparing for complex test routes

Factors That Affect How Many Lessons You Need

Several factors determine whether you will need closer to 10 or 20 hours of professional instruction.

  • How much private practice you get between lessons (more practice = fewer lessons needed)
  • Whether you have any prior driving experience (e.g., driving in another country)
  • How quickly you build confidence and manage nerves
  • The complexity of the road test route at your DriveTest centre
  • Whether you struggle with specific skills like parallel parking or highway driving

The Value of Consistency Over Volume

Booking 20 lessons crammed into two weeks is less effective than spreading 12 lessons over two months with regular private practice in between. Skills like observation habits, smooth braking, and spatial awareness take time to become automatic. Your instructor can help you identify which areas need the most work and advise on the right lesson count for your situation.
