What Age Can You Start BDE in Ontario?

ByAzmaray Nadi·MTO Certified Instructor

You must be at least 16 years old to enrol in a BDE program in Ontario. You do not need to have your G1 licence before starting the classroom portion, but you must hold a valid G1 before completing the in-car driving lessons.

The Minimum Age Is 16

The MTO requires that students be at least 16 years old to participate in a BDE program. This matches the minimum age requirement for obtaining a G1 licence in Ontario. No MTO-approved driving school can enrol a student who is under 16 in the in-car component.

Do You Need a G1 Before Starting?

You do not need a G1 licence to begin the classroom portion of BDE. Many students start the classroom component while they are studying for their G1 knowledge test. However, you must have a valid G1 in hand before you can get behind the wheel for any in-car lessons. This is an MTO rule, not just a school policy.

Can You Enrol Before You Turn 16?

Some driving schools allow students to enrol and pre-pay for BDE before their 16th birthday, but no in-car lessons can be scheduled until the student has both turned 16 and obtained their G1. If you are 15 and approaching your 16th birthday, it can make sense to study for your G1 knowledge test in advance so you are ready to start lessons quickly.

Is There a Maximum Age?

There is no upper age limit for BDE in Ontario. Adults who are getting their licence for the first time at any age can enrol in a BDE program and receive the same benefits: the shorter waiting period, the MTO certificate, and the insurance discount eligibility. Older first-time drivers often find BDE especially valuable because of the structured classroom component.
