What Is Included in the BDE Course in Ontario?

ByAzmaray Nadi·MTO Certified Instructor

The BDE course in Ontario includes 20 hours of classroom instruction covering traffic laws, road signs, and defensive driving, plus 10 hours of in-car training with a certified instructor. Upon completion, you receive an MTO certificate that shortens your G1 waiting period and qualifies you for insurance discounts.

Key Facts

  • Ontario road signs, signals, and pavement markings
  • Traffic laws and the Highway Traffic Act
  • Defensive driving strategies
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs, and fatigue on driving
  • Distracted driving laws and consequences

The Classroom Component: 20 Hours

The classroom portion of BDE is built around the MTO curriculum and covers everything a new driver needs to know before getting behind the wheel. Topics are standardized across all MTO-approved schools.

  • Ontario road signs, signals, and pavement markings
  • Traffic laws and the Highway Traffic Act
  • Defensive driving strategies
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs, and fatigue on driving
  • Distracted driving laws and consequences
  • Emergency driving situations
  • Sharing the road with cyclists, pedestrians, and large trucks
  • Environmental driving (night, rain, snow, fog)

The In-Car Component: 10 Hours

The in-car portion is where you apply the theory from the classroom to real driving situations. Each lesson is conducted in a dual-control vehicle with an MTO-certified instructor who can brake or steer if needed. Lessons are typically structured to build on each other, starting with basics and progressing to more complex situations.

  • Basic vehicle controls and starting/stopping
  • Turns, lane changes, and intersections
  • Parking manoeuvres: parallel, forward, reverse stall
  • Highway entry and exit
  • Backing, three-point turns, and low-speed manoeuvres
  • Observation habits: mirrors, shoulder checks, blind spots

The In-Car Observation Hour

MTO also requires 1 hour of in-car observation, where you ride as a passenger while another student drives and the instructor teaches. This gives you a different perspective on common mistakes and how the instructor corrects them. Many students find this surprisingly useful for identifying habits to avoid.

What You Receive at the End

After completing all required hours and passing any school assessments, you receive a BDE completion certificate issued by your driving school. This certificate is what you present to DriveTest to qualify for an early G2 road test (at 8 months instead of 12 from your G1 date). The certificate is also accepted by most insurance companies for a new-driver discount.
