What to Expect on the G Road Test in Ontario

ByAzmaray Nadi·MTO Certified Instructor

The Ontario G road test is a 30 to 45 minute drive that covers city streets and a highway section. The examiner will assess your observation habits, speed management, lane usage, and highway skills including merging, maintaining speed, and exiting. Passing earns you a full, unrestricted G licence.

Key Facts

  • Full stops at stop signs and red lights
  • Proper mirror and shoulder checks before turns and lane changes
  • Speed management in residential and commercial areas
  • Lane positioning during left and right turns
  • Signaling well in advance of every turn and lane change

Before the Test Begins

When you arrive at the DriveTest centre, check in at the counter and present your G2 licence. The examiner will meet you at your vehicle for a brief pre-test inspection. They will check that your vehicle is registered, insured, and has working lights, signals, horn, and brakes. Once everything checks out, you will be directed to begin the test.

The City Driving Portion

The first section of the test takes place on regular city and suburban roads near the DriveTest centre. The examiner will give you verbal directions throughout. They are looking at how you handle everyday driving situations.

  • Speed management in residential and commercial areas
  • Lane positioning during left and right turns
  • Signaling well in advance of every turn and lane change
  • Maintaining safe following distances
  • Smooth acceleration and braking

The Highway Portion

After the city section, the examiner will direct you onto a 400-series highway or controlled-access expressway. This is where the G test differs from the G2. You will be expected to use the on-ramp to accelerate and merge smoothly into highway traffic, maintain an appropriate following distance at speed, execute safe lane changes with mirrors and shoulder checks, and take the off-ramp when directed with smooth, controlled deceleration.

After the Test

When you return to the DriveTest centre, the examiner will tell you whether you passed or failed. If you pass, you will receive a temporary paper licence on the spot and your G licence card will be mailed within a few weeks. If you fail, the examiner will explain which areas were unsatisfactory. You must wait at least 10 days before rebooking and pay the test fee again.
