When Can You Book Your G2 Road Test?

Before you open DriveTest.ca, make sure you are actually eligible to book. Ontario's graduated licensing system sets minimum hold times for your G1 before you can take the G2 road test. Getting this wrong means your booking will be rejected at check-in.

  • Without BDE certification: must hold your G1 for at least 12 months
  • With a completed BDE certificate: hold time is reduced to 8 months
  • Your G1 must be valid (not expired) on the date of your test
  • You must be at least 16 years old

How to Book Your G2 Road Test on DriveTest.ca

The Ontario government requires all G2 road test bookings to be made through DriveTest.ca. There is no phone booking option. The process takes about 10 minutes once you have your G1 licence number ready.

  • Go to drivetest.ca and click 'Book a Road Test'
  • Enter your Ontario G1 driver's licence number
  • Select 'G2' as the test class
  • Choose your preferred DriveTest centre from the dropdown
  • Pick an available date and time from the calendar
  • Review the booking summary and confirm
  • Pay the road test fee using a credit or debit card
  • Save your confirmation number and email confirmation

GTA DriveTest Centres: Which One Is Right for You?

The GTA has multiple DriveTest centres with different route characteristics and wait times. Choosing the right centre is a genuine strategy decision. Students in Vaughan, Woodbridge, Kleinburg, and Thornhill have several realistic options.

Hwy 400 Maple (Vaughan)

Located at 2601 Rutherford Rd in Maple, this is the most convenient centre for SafePass students in Vaughan, Woodbridge, and Kleinburg. The test routes use residential streets in Maple and Vaughan with moderate traffic. You will encounter intersections with traffic lights, stop signs, school zones, and at least one highway on-ramp or merge situation. Parking is straightforward and the centre is easy to reach via Hwy 400.

Downsview (North Toronto)

Located at 99 Henderson Ave near Sheppard and Allen Road. This is one of the busiest centres in Ontario and historically has been popular with students because its routes use residential streets that are predictable and manageable. Wait times for appointments can be longer than Maple. The surrounding neighbourhood has changed over the years, so practice in the Downsview area before your test.

Etobicoke

Located at 4601 Islington Ave. Routes here involve busier suburban streets and multi-lane roads. If you have done most of your practice in Vaughan or North Toronto, the Etobicoke traffic patterns may feel unfamiliar. Best for students who have been practising in the west end of Toronto.

Metro East (Scarborough)

Located at 1448 Lawrence Ave E. Test routes include heavier traffic and more complex intersections. If your driving experience is in quieter areas, Metro East is not the best choice. The wait times are sometimes shorter than downtown centres, which attracts students from across the city.

Port Union (Scarborough East)

Located at 320 Port Union Rd near Kingston Road. Routes are primarily suburban with moderate traffic. Convenient for students in Pickering, Ajax, and eastern Scarborough. Less commonly used by students from Vaughan and the northwest GTA.

How Much Does the G2 Road Test Cost?

The G2 road test fee in Ontario is set by DriveTest and is subject to change. As of 2025, the standard G2 road test fee is approximately $53.75 plus applicable taxes. This fee is paid at the time of booking on DriveTest.ca. If you fail and need to rebook, you pay the full fee again. Cancelling with less than 48 hours notice also forfeits your fee. The only exception is if DriveTest cancels your appointment for any reason, such as a centre closure or examiner unavailability, in which case they will refund or reschedule at no charge.

  • G2 road test fee: approximately $53.75 (plus tax, subject to change)
  • Fee paid online at time of booking
  • Rebooking after a fail: full fee required
  • Cancellation within 48 hours: fee is forfeited
  • Check DriveTest.ca for current pricing before booking

How to Get an Earlier G2 Appointment

The most common frustration is finding that the earliest available date is 6 to 12 weeks away. There are legitimate strategies to get in sooner. The key insight is that cancellations happen constantly, and those spots open up without warning. The students who get earlier appointments are the ones who check frequently.

  • Check DriveTest.ca daily, preferably early morning (7-9 AM) when cancellations tend to post
  • Check multiple test centres and compare availability dates
  • Check dates in the current week and next week, not just the next available month
  • Weekday mornings typically have more availability than weekend slots
  • Midwinter bookings (January-February) are often shorter wait than spring and summer
  • If the Maple (Hwy 400) centre is full, try Downsview or Etobicoke as alternatives

What to Bring to Your G2 Road Test

Arriving at DriveTest without the right documents or vehicle will result in your test being cancelled without a refund. Run this checklist the night before your appointment.

  • Your valid Ontario G1 driver's licence (not expired)
  • Vehicle with valid licence plates, insurance, and safety certificate
  • Vehicle insurance documents (pink slip)
  • Vehicle registration
  • If using a driving school car: the school handles vehicle documents
  • BDE certificate if applicable (the MTO system usually has this on file, but bring it anyway)
  • Payment is already done at booking, so no cash or card needed at the centre

What Happens If You Fail the G2 Road Test?

Failing your G2 does not restart your G1 hold period. You can rebook and try again as many times as needed, paying the test fee each time. Your examiner will give you a detailed score sheet showing exactly where you lost points. Use this feedback to direct your practice before rebooking. There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts, but booking availability will determine when your next test date is. Most students who fail find the score sheet genuinely helpful and make targeted improvements before their second attempt.

Booking Your G Test After Passing G2

Once you pass your G2, the clock starts on the next holding period. In Ontario, you must hold your G2 for at least 12 months before taking the G road test. The G test is a highway driving assessment and is booked through the same DriveTest.ca system. You select 'G' as the test class. The process and fees are similar, but the test itself requires highway driving including entry, exit, passing, and maintaining safe following distance at highway speeds. Plan ahead: popular test centres fill up weeks in advance for G tests as well.
