What Is the BDE Program?
Beginner Driver Education (BDE) is an MTO-approved driving course for new drivers in Ontario. It combines classroom instruction, in-car lessons, and at-home practice to give you a complete foundation in safe driving. The program is designed for G1 licence holders who want structured, professional training before taking their G2 road test.
What Does BDE Include?
A standard BDE program includes 20 hours of classroom or online instruction, 10 hours of in-car driving with a certified instructor, and 10 hours of home-link practice activities. SafePass BDE packages range from 10 to 15 hours of in-car time depending on the package you choose, giving you more behind-the-wheel experience than the minimum requirement.
- 20 hours of classroom/online training
- 10-15 hours of one-on-one in-car lessons (depending on package)
- 10 hours of home-link activities
- MTO certification upon completion
- Insurance discount certificate
How BDE Reduces Your Wait Time
Without BDE certification, G1 holders must wait 12 months before taking the G2 road test. With a BDE certificate, that wait drops to 8 months. This four-month reduction means you can get your G2 licence sooner and start driving independently. For students who got their G1 in the spring, BDE means potentially having their G2 before winter arrives.
Is BDE Worth the Investment?
Yes, for most new drivers. Beyond the reduced wait time, BDE graduates qualify for insurance discounts that can save hundreds of dollars per year. The structured training also means you are significantly more likely to pass your G2 on the first attempt. Students who take BDE have better observation habits, smoother vehicle control, and more confidence on test day.
Choosing the Right BDE Package
SafePass offers three BDE packages. Silver ($599) includes 10 hours of in-car instruction. Gold ($799) includes 11 hours plus use of the school car for your road test. Platinum ($999) includes 15 hours of in-car time, the school car for your test, and additional practice. If budget allows, the extra driving hours make a measurable difference in readiness.
