What Happens Before the Test Begins?
According to DriveTest Ontario, when you arrive at the centre, bring your valid G1 licence. The examiner will check your vehicle for basic roadworthiness: lights, horn, windshield wipers, and signals must all work. You will pull into the test lane. The examiner will introduce themselves, explain the format briefly, and ask you to start the vehicle.

What Manoeuvres Are Tested?
The G2 test covers the common driving situations you will encounter on everyday roads. The specific route varies by centre, but all G2 tests include left and right turns, proceeding through intersections, lane changes, following speed limits, and parallel parking or a three-point turn. Scanning, signalling, mirror checks, and shoulder checks are evaluated continuously throughout.
- Left and right turns (including protected and unprotected)
- Lane changes with signals and shoulder checks
- Intersections (traffic lights, stop signs, yield signs)
- Following the speed limit and adjusting for conditions
- Parallel parking or three-point turn (varies by centre)
How Are You Scored?
According to DriveTest Ontario, the examiner marks errors on a score sheet in real time. Minor errors are acceptable if isolated, but accumulating too many adds up to a fail. Serious errors and critical errors are separate categories. You do not need a perfect score, but you need to stay below the point threshold while avoiding any critical error. The examiner does not provide commentary during the test.
Is Highway Driving on the G2 Test?
Most G2 road tests in Ontario do not include highway driving. Highway driving is typically tested on the full G road test. However, some DriveTest centres near highway-accessible areas do include a short highway segment. Check with your specific centre when booking. If highway driving is included, you will be tested on merging, maintaining speed, and safe lane changes.
What Happens After the Test?
When you return to the DriveTest centre, the examiner will tell you the result. If you pass, your G2 licence upgrade is processed on the spot and a temporary licence is issued. If you fail, the examiner will briefly explain the main errors. You must wait at least 10 days before rebooking. You keep your G1 licence in the meantime.
