The intersection ahead sign warns that a cross street or side road is coming up. It is placed where the intersection is not clearly visible in advance, such as on a hill or after a curve.

Last updated: April 4, 2026

An intersection ahead sign is posted wherever an upcoming intersection is not visible far enough in advance for drivers to reduce speed and prepare safely. The sign shows the type of junction: a full cross, a side road joining from the right, or a side road joining from the left. The shape shows the approximate layout of the intersection.

What does the Intersection Ahead Sign mean?

An intersection ahead sign is posted wherever an upcoming intersection is not visible far enough in advance for drivers to reduce speed and prepare safely. The sign shows the type of junction: a full cross, a side road joining from the right, or a side road joining from the left. The shape shows the approximate layout of the intersection.

What to do when you see it

Reduce speed slightly and heighten attention. Watch for vehicles entering the main road from the side road or cross street. Be prepared to stop if control signs are present at the junction. Even if you have the right-of-way, scan the intersection before passing through.

Where you'll see it in Ontario

Intersection ahead signs appear before intersections that are approached over hill crests, around curves, or in areas with limited sight lines. They are common on rural roads and suburban arterials where intersections may be hidden by vegetation or terrain.

G1 test relevance

G1 candidates should be able to identify different variations of the intersection ahead sign: the full cross (four-way), the T-intersection variant, and the side road from the right or left. Each shape indicates a different road configuration ahead.

Common mistakes drivers make

Ignoring this sign because traffic appears light is a common error. Side roads can produce fast-moving vehicles that did not stop at the junction. Always scan the intersection even when you believe you have right-of-way.
