Narrow Bridge Sign

The narrow bridge sign warns that the bridge ahead is narrower than the road leading to it. Drivers may need to yield to oncoming traffic or position their vehicle carefully.

Last updated: April 4, 2026

A narrow bridge has a roadway width that does not fully accommodate normal lane widths for both directions of travel. Vehicles may need to slow significantly and edge past each other or wait for oncoming traffic to clear before proceeding. Some narrow bridges are one-lane with a yield or stop sign indicating priority.

What does the Narrow Bridge Sign mean?

A narrow bridge has a roadway width that does not fully accommodate normal lane widths for both directions of travel. Vehicles may need to slow significantly and edge past each other or wait for oncoming traffic to clear before proceeding. Some narrow bridges are one-lane with a yield or stop sign indicating priority.

What to do when you see it

Reduce speed before the bridge. Look ahead for oncoming traffic on the bridge. If the bridge is one lane, yield to any vehicle already on it. Stay centred in your lane and be prepared for side mirrors to pass very close to oncoming vehicles or bridge rails. Do not attempt to pass on a narrow bridge.

Where you'll see it in Ontario

Narrow bridge signs are common on rural Ontario roads where older bridges were not built to current lane width standards. They appear on township and county roads throughout southern and eastern Ontario, particularly on roads crossing creeks and small rivers.

G1 test relevance

Narrow bridge questions in the G1 test focus on the correct driver action: slow down, assess oncoming traffic, and yield if necessary. The no-passing rule on narrow bridges is also important.

Common mistakes drivers make

Maintaining normal road speed onto a narrow bridge is dangerous, as the transition from full-width to narrow road happens quickly. Another mistake is attempting to pass a slow vehicle on a narrow bridge where lane widths do not permit it.
