Do You Need to Parallel Park on the G2 Test in Ontario?

Parallel parking may or may not be required on your G2 road test in Ontario. It depends on the DriveTest centre and the specific route assigned to you. Some centres require parallel parking while others use reverse stall parking instead. You should be prepared for both.

Key Facts

  • Signal before beginning the maneuver
  • Check mirrors and over your right shoulder before reversing
  • Smoothly reverse and angle the car into the space
  • Final position: within 30 cm of the curb, not touching it
  • Do not mount the curb at any point

It Depends on Your DriveTest Centre

The Ontario G2 road test includes a parking component, but the type of parking required varies by location. Some DriveTest centres test parallel parking on a street, while others test reverse stall parking (backing into a parking space). A small number of centres may include both. You will not know in advance which type you will be asked to perform, so preparing for both is the safest approach.

Parallel Parking: What the Examiner Looks For

When parallel parking is required, the examiner is assessing your ability to park safely and accurately between two designated markers (cones or vehicles).

  • Signal before beginning the maneuver
  • Check mirrors and over your right shoulder before reversing
  • Smoothly reverse and angle the car into the space
  • Final position: within 30 cm of the curb, not touching it
  • Do not mount the curb at any point
  • Check traffic before opening your door after parking

Reverse Stall Parking: What the Examiner Looks For

Reverse stall parking (also called reverse parking or backing in) is becoming more common at Ontario DriveTest centres. You will be asked to reverse into a marked parking stall from a driving lane.

  • Signal before starting
  • Check mirrors and both blind spots
  • Reverse slowly and accurately between the lines
  • Final position: centered in the stall, wheels straight
  • Do not cross the stall lines

How to Prepare for Both Types

Practice both parallel parking and reverse stall parking before your test day. Ask your driving instructor which type is typically used at your chosen DriveTest centre. Even if your centre primarily uses one type, being comfortable with both reduces anxiety on test day. SafePass instructors can teach you both maneuvers and help you practice in the area around your test centre.
