How Many Questions and Sections Are There?
According to DriveTest Ontario, the G1 knowledge test has exactly 40 multiple-choice questions. The test is divided into two equal sections: 20 questions on road rules (traffic laws, signs, signals, and right-of-way) and 20 questions on road signs (identifying and understanding all standard Ontario road signs). You must score at least 16 out of 20 in each section (80%) to pass. Getting 16 right in one section but only 15 in the other means a failed attempt.
What Does the Test Cover?
The road rules section covers Ontario traffic laws including speed limits, right-of-way at intersections, lane changing, following distance, alcohol and drug rules, and the graduated licensing system. The road signs section covers all sign shapes, colours, and meanings used on Ontario roads.

How Long Does the Test Take?
Most people complete the G1 test in 20 to 30 minutes. There is no time limit, so take as long as you need. The test is taken on a computer at a DriveTest centre and the results are shown immediately. If you fail, you must wait at least one day before retaking it.
How Should You Prepare?
According to the Ontario Driver's Handbook, which is the primary study resource, it is available free on the Ontario government website. Most DriveTest centres also have practice test kiosks in the waiting area. Study both sections. Many students underestimate the road signs section and lose marks there.
What Happens After You Pass?
Passing the G1 test gets you a G1 licence. You can then start driving with a licensed driver aged 25 or older in the passenger seat. After 12 months (or 8 months with BDE), you are eligible to take the G2 road test.
