What Is the Pass Mark for the G1 Test in Ontario?

The G1 knowledge test in Ontario has 40 questions split into two sections of 20 questions each. You must score at least 16 out of 20 (80%) in each section to pass. Passing both sections in the same sitting is required; you cannot pass one section and return later for the other.

Key Facts

  • Read the full MTO Driver's Handbook at least twice
  • Focus heavily on road signs, shapes, and colours
  • Use free practice tests on drivetest.ca
  • Study the rules around right-of-way, speed limits, and parking
  • Take notes on rules that are easy to mix up

G1 Test Format and Scoring

The G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions divided into two equal sections. The first 20 questions cover road rules, and the second 20 questions test your ability to identify road signs. You must answer at least 16 questions correctly in each section, for a combined minimum of 32 out of 40.

What Happens If You Fail One Section

You must pass both sections in the same sitting. If you score 16 or higher on road rules but fail road signs (or vice versa), the entire test is considered a fail. You must rebook, pay the fee again, and retake all 40 questions. There is no partial credit carried between attempts.

How to Prepare to Pass on Your First Try

The MTO Driver's Handbook is the only official study source that covers everything tested on the G1 exam. Most test failures come from road sign recognition, which requires memorization.

What Happens After You Pass

Once you pass both sections, DriveTest issues your G1 licence on the spot. Your G1 is valid for 5 years. You must hold your G1 for a minimum of 12 months (or 8 months with a completed BDE course) before you can take the G2 road test.
