Metro East DriveTest Centre: Location and Overview
The Toronto Metro East DriveTest Centre is located at 1448 Lawrence Avenue East (Unit 15) in Scarborough, inside Victoria Terrace Plaza near Victoria Park Avenue. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Metro East is one of the busier GTA centres and serves students from Scarborough, North York, and East Toronto. The test routes combine busy arterial roads with quieter residential streets, making this a more urban experience than Downsview or Port Union.
The G2 Test Route: What to Expect
The Metro East G2 route uses a consistent framework, though examiners may vary the exact sequence slightly. The route typically begins on Lawrence Avenue East and moves into the residential grid east and south of the centre.
- Exit the centre and head onto Lawrence Avenue East (busy 4-lane arterial, 50 km/h)
- East along Lawrence Avenue East toward Victoria Park Avenue
- Right onto Victoria Park Avenue (50 km/h, multi-lane)
- Right onto Sloane Avenue (residential, 30-40 km/h)
- West on Sloane Avenue toward Prestbury Street
- Right onto Wyndcliff Crescent (residential loop, manoeuvres performed here)
- West on Wyndcliff Crescent toward Cobham Crescent
- Right onto Teak Avenue, then left onto Carnforth Road
- Return route back to the centre via Lawrence Avenue East
The Urban Challenge: Lawrence Avenue and Victoria Park
Lawrence Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue are both busy 4-lane roads with frequent traffic lights, bus stops, pedestrian crossings, and turning vehicles. This section separates Metro East from quieter suburban test routes. You will be evaluated on lane positioning, smooth stopping at traffic lights, correct signal use, and the ability to navigate turning vehicles and buses without reacting erratically. If most of your practice has been on quiet residential streets, spend time on Lawrence Avenue East specifically before your test day.
The Residential Section: Sloane and Wyndcliff
After the arterial section, the route drops into the residential streets east of Victoria Park. Sloane Avenue and Wyndcliff Crescent are typical Scarborough residential roads: narrower, 30 to 40 km/h, with parked cars, intersections without traffic lights, and a crescent layout that requires accurate turning. This is where parallel parking, 3-point turns, and roadside stops are typically performed. The contrast between the busy arterial section and the quiet residential section is intentional: the examiner is checking whether you adjust your driving style appropriately for each environment.
- Slow to the appropriate speed entering residential streets
- Full stop at all stop signs, even if the intersection appears clear
- Parallel parking on Wyndcliff or Sloane: practise in this specific area beforehand
- Shoulder checks on every turn and lane change, including residential turns
- Watch for parked cars with passengers that may open doors
Manoeuvres Required
Metro East G2 tests typically include three manoeuvres, all performed in the residential section of the route.
- Parallel parking: between two parked vehicles or reference markers
- 3-point turn: full reversal within the road width, signals and observations required
- Roadside stop and pull-out: stop safely at the curb, then re-enter traffic with full signal and shoulder check
How to Prepare for Metro East
Drive Lawrence Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue in normal traffic conditions before your test. The busy arterial section is the most anxiety-inducing part for students who have primarily practised in quieter areas. Then practice the residential grid: Sloane Avenue, Wyndcliff Crescent, and the surrounding streets. Know how to parallel park on a narrower residential street with parked cars nearby. Arrive early and familiarise yourself with the centre's parking lot exit, which takes you directly onto Lawrence Avenue East.
