What does the Bicycle Crossing Sign mean?

A bicycle crossing sign indicates a designated or well-used point where cyclists cross the roadway. It may mark the crossing of a dedicated bicycle path, trail, or shared lane across a road. Cyclists crossing at a designated crossing have the same right-of-way protections as pedestrians at crosswalks.

What to do when you see it

Reduce speed and watch for cyclists approaching from both sides of the road. If a cyclist is crossing or signalling intent to cross, yield to them. Do not cut off a cyclist who has entered the crossing. Check both mirrors and over your shoulder before turning across a designated bicycle crossing.

Where you'll see it in Ontario

Bicycle crossing signs appear where multi-use trails or dedicated bicycle paths cross roads, near parks, conservation areas, school areas, and wherever cycling infrastructure intersects with motor vehicle traffic.

G1 test relevance

G1 questions on cyclists include right-of-way rules at crossings. Cyclists at a designated crossing have the same rights as pedestrians. Candidates should also know the one-metre minimum passing distance when overtaking cyclists on roads.

Common mistakes drivers make

Not checking for cyclists before making a right turn is a very common error. Cyclists travel faster than pedestrians and can arrive at a crossing quickly. A right turn on a green light across a bicycle crossing requires a shoulder check.
