What does the Divided Highway Ends Sign mean?

When the divided highway ends, both directions of traffic share the same roadway without a physical barrier. Head-on collisions become possible again. Drivers must ensure they are in the correct right-hand lane before the division ends and must watch for oncoming traffic resuming on the opposite side of the centreline.

What to do when you see it

Ensure you are in the right-hand lane before the divided section ends. Reduce speed if the undivided section is a lower-speed zone. Watch for oncoming traffic. Do not straddle the centre line on the undivided road. Increase following distance if visibility is reduced.

Where you'll see it in Ontario

Divided highway ends signs appear where a divided road transitions back to a two-lane undivided road, at the end of town bypass sections, and where highway medians end due to construction or road design changes.

G1 test relevance

G1 candidates should understand the sequence: divided highway begins sign, travel on divided road, then divided highway ends sign. After the ends sign, normal two-way rules apply and passing must be done with care.

Common mistakes drivers make

Not moving back to the right-hand lane before the divided highway ends is a dangerous error that can result in a head-on collision when oncoming traffic reappears.
