Winding Road Sign

The winding road sign warns of a series of three or more curves or bends in the road ahead. Drivers should reduce speed and maintain a steady pace through the entire winding section, not just the first curve.

Last updated: April 4, 2026

Unlike the curve ahead sign, which warns of a single curve, the winding road sign indicates that an extended section of road with multiple curves is ahead. The S-shaped or winding arrow represents the general shape of the road. Drivers cannot rely on the road straightening after the first bend because additional curves follow in quick succession.

What does the Winding Road Sign mean?

Unlike the curve ahead sign, which warns of a single curve, the winding road sign indicates that an extended section of road with multiple curves is ahead. The S-shaped or winding arrow represents the general shape of the road. Drivers cannot rely on the road straightening after the first bend because additional curves follow in quick succession.

What to do when you see it

Reduce speed and maintain that reduced speed for the entire winding section. Do not attempt to pass. Stay well within your lane. Use your horn at blind corners if your sight line is limited. On two-lane roads, keep to the far right to maximize the distance from oncoming traffic.

Where you'll see it in Ontario

Winding road signs are common on rural and cottage country roads in Ontario, particularly on roads through the Canadian Shield, the Niagara Escarpment, and the Oak Ridges Moraine. They appear at the start of a winding section and indicate the curves extend for some distance.

G1 test relevance

G1 questions on winding road signs test whether candidates understand the sign means multiple curves, not just one. The correct driving response is to reduce speed for the duration of the winding section and avoid passing throughout.

Common mistakes drivers make

Speeding up between curves when the road briefly straightens is a common mistake on winding roads. Drivers should maintain a consistent reduced speed throughout. Another error is attempting to pass between bends when the sight line appears adequate.
