How Long After Getting Your G2 Can You Take the G Test in Ontario?

You must hold your G2 licence for a minimum of 12 months before you can take the G road test in Ontario. There is no way to shorten this waiting period — unlike the G1-to-G2 wait, BDE does not reduce the G2-to-G timeline.

Key Facts

  • G2 valid for 5 years from issue date
  • Must pass G test before G2 expires
  • GTA DriveTest wait times: 4 to 6 months
  • Book your G test well before the 5-year mark

How Long Must You Hold a G2?

Under Ontario's graduated licensing system, you must hold a G2 licence for at least 12 months before booking a G road test. This applies to everyone — there is no program or exception that reduces the G2 waiting period. Check the expiry date on your G2 and subtract 12 months to find the earliest date you can test.

Does BDE Reduce the G2-to-G Wait?

BDE (Beginner Driver Education) reduces only the G1-to-G2 wait from 12 months to 8 months. Once you hold a G2, the 12-month wait for the G test is fixed regardless of BDE completion. Do not confuse the two timelines.

Is Your G2 Expiry the Real Deadline?

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, a G2 licence is valid for 5 years from the date it was issued. If you do not pass the G road test before your G2 expires, your licence lapses and you must restart the graduated process from the G1 knowledge test. Book your G test with enough lead time given DriveTest centre wait times of 4 to 6 months in the GTA.

What Should You Expect on the G Road Test?

The G test is longer and more demanding than the G2. It includes highway driving at 400-series speeds (100 km/h), complex intersections, and a higher standard for overall driving judgment. Most students benefit from 2 to 3 refresher lessons focused on highway driving before attempting the G test.
