Option 1: Replace Online

Eligible Ontario residents can replace a lost or stolen driver's licence through the ServiceOntario online portal at ontario.ca/page/renew-or-replace-drivers-licence. To use the online option, you must have a valid Ontario health card for identity verification. The replacement card is mailed to your address on file within 4 to 6 weeks.

Option 2: Replace In Person at ServiceOntario

If you cannot use the online portal or prefer in-person service, visit any ServiceOntario location. You will need to bring acceptable identification to verify your identity and pay the replacement fee. A temporary paper licence may be issued while you wait for the new card.

Can You Still Drive With a Lost Licence?

Yes. Losing the physical card does not suspend your driving privileges. Your licence record exists in the MTO database tied to your licence number. You are still legally licensed and allowed to drive. However, you should carry your temporary receipt or paper confirmation as proof while your replacement card is in transit.

What to Do If Your Licence Was Stolen

If your licence was stolen rather than simply lost, it is advisable to file a report with the police and notify ServiceOntario. Although a stolen licence cannot directly be used to drive your vehicle without also having your car, it could be used for identity fraud. ServiceOntario can flag the lost licence number in the system when you apply for a replacement.
