How to Change Your Address on an Ontario Driver's Licence

In Ontario, you must update your address with the MTO within 6 days of moving. You can change your address online through the ServiceOntario website, by phone, or in person at any ServiceOntario location. The address update is free and does not require a new physical licence card.

You Are Required by Law to Update Your Address

Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, all drivers must notify the MTO of a new address within 6 days of moving. Failing to keep your address current is a minor offence. More practically, your vehicle registration, renewal notices, and important government mail are all tied to the address on file.

How to Update Your Address Online

The fastest way to update your address is through the ServiceOntario website at ontario.ca/changeofaddress. You will need your driver's licence number and your date of birth. The change is processed immediately, and there is no fee. Your current physical licence card remains valid; a new card is not automatically issued unless you request a replacement.

Updating by Phone or In Person

If you prefer not to use the online portal, you can update your address by calling ServiceOntario at 1-800-387-3445, or by visiting any ServiceOntario location in person. In-person updates may take longer due to wait times, but allow you to request a replacement card with your new address printed on it if desired.

Does Your Physical Licence Card Show the New Address?

Ontario driver's licences do not display your address on the front of the card. The address is stored in the MTO database and linked to your licence number. You do not need a new physical card simply because you moved. However, if you want a card replacement for other reasons, you can request one at ServiceOntario for a fee.
