What Documents Do You Need for the G1 Test in Ontario?

To take the G1 knowledge test in Ontario, you must bring government-issued identification that proves your legal name, date of birth, and signature. A passport plus one supporting piece of ID is the most reliable combination. Without acceptable ID, DriveTest will not allow you to write the test.

Key Facts

  • Canadian passport
  • Foreign passport
  • Canadian birth certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship certificate or card
  • Permanent Resident card

Primary Identity Documents Accepted

DriveTest requires at least one piece of primary identification that establishes your legal name and date of birth. The following are accepted as primary ID.

  • Canadian passport
  • Foreign passport
  • Canadian birth certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship certificate or card
  • Permanent Resident card
  • Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292)

Signature Requirement

At least one piece of your identification must include your signature. If your primary ID (such as a birth certificate) does not have a signature, you must bring a secondary piece of ID that does. Accepted signature documents include a valid credit card, bank card, or any government-issued ID with a signature.

What Is Not Accepted

DriveTest does not accept photocopies, expired documents, or documents with visible alterations. A health card alone is not sufficient as primary ID. Student cards and library cards are not accepted. Make sure all documents are original and current before your appointment.

  • Photocopies or digital scans of documents
  • Expired passports or expired government ID
  • Ontario health card as sole identification
  • Student ID cards
  • Any document that has been altered or damaged

Special Cases: New Immigrants and International Students

Newcomers to Canada can use a foreign passport combined with a valid immigration document such as a study permit, work permit, or Permanent Resident card. International students are eligible to obtain a G1 licence in Ontario and should bring their passport and current study permit to the DriveTest centre.
