What Happens If the Weather Is Bad on Your Road Test Day in Ontario?

If the weather is unsafe on your road test day in Ontario, the DriveTest examiner has the authority to postpone or cancel your test at no charge to you. You will be rescheduled without losing your fee. You cannot cancel on your own due to weather without following the standard 48-hour cancellation policy.

Key Facts

  • Examiner-initiated cancellation: fee fully protected, free reschedule
  • Self-initiated cancellation under 48 hours: fee forfeited
  • Self-initiated cancellation 48+ hours before: fee retained as credit
  • If unsure, show up and let the examiner assess conditions
  • Arrive early so you are there when the decision is made

Who Decides If Conditions Are Too Dangerous?

The DriveTest examiner, not the applicant, makes the official call on whether conditions are safe enough to proceed. If the examiner determines that weather or road conditions pose a risk, the test will be postponed. This decision is made on the day, typically at or shortly before your scheduled appointment time.

Will You Lose Your Fee If the Test Is Cancelled Due to Weather?

No. If a DriveTest examiner cancels or postpones your test due to unsafe weather conditions, you will not lose your fee. DriveTest will reschedule you at no additional charge. Your original payment carries over to the next available appointment.

Can You Cancel Yourself Because of Bad Weather?

You can cancel your appointment yourself if you are concerned about weather, but the standard 48-hour cancellation policy still applies. If you cancel fewer than 48 hours before your test because of snow or rain, you will forfeit your fee. The fee-free reschedule only applies when the examiner makes the call.

Tips for Test Days With Uncertain Weather

Check the forecast the night before and the morning of your test. If weather looks borderline, the safest approach is to show up at the DriveTest centre and let the examiner decide. Arriving and having the examiner cancel protects your fee. Cancelling yourself because you assumed it would be unsafe puts your fee at risk. If conditions are clearly dangerous, call the centre before leaving home.
