Can a Parent Be in the Car During the G2 Test in Ontario?

No, a parent or any accompanying person cannot be in the car during the G2 road test in Ontario. Only the test candidate and the DriveTest examiner are permitted in the vehicle during the test. Any additional passenger must wait at the DriveTest centre.

Only You and the Examiner

DriveTest policy is clear: during the G2 road test, only the candidate and the DriveTest examiner are permitted in the vehicle. No parents, family members, friends, or driving instructors may ride along. This policy applies to the G road test as well. The reason is to ensure the test environment is consistent and uninfluenced.

Where Do Parents Wait?

Parents or anyone who drove with you to the DriveTest centre must wait inside the centre or in the parking lot. There is no viewing area or ability to watch the test from outside the vehicle. The test typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes for the G2, so the wait is not long. Parents should be prepared to wait without contact during the test.

What About the Driving Instructor?

If you are using a driving school vehicle for your test, the situation is slightly different. Your instructor will wait outside or in the parking lot while the examiner conducts the test with you alone in the vehicle. Some driving schools offer a pre-test warm-up lesson that ends at the DriveTest centre, after which the instructor steps out and the examiner takes over. The examiner always conducts the test alone with the candidate.

Can a Parent Supervise After the Test?

After the test is complete and the examiner has given you the result, the examiner will leave the vehicle. At that point, any accompanying parent or person can rejoin you. If you pass and need to drive home, a fully licensed driver must accompany you if you are still driving under a G1 license. Once you hold a G2, you can drive back on your own.
