Vehicle Requirements for the G2 Road Test

The car must be properly registered in Ontario (or have valid out-of-province registration), have valid insurance, all lights and signals must work, the horn must be functional, tires must be in good condition, and the vehicle must have a working handbrake. The examiner will do a quick vehicle check before the test begins.

  • Valid Ontario registration (or out-of-province equivalent)
  • Proof of insurance in the vehicle

  • Horn in working order

  • Functioning parking or emergency brake
  • Clean windshield with working wipers

Using a Driving School Car Instead

Many candidates choose to use their driving school's vehicle for the road test. This is allowed and is often a good option because instructor vehicles are maintained to be road-test ready. If you use a driving school vehicle, your instructor will typically wait outside the DriveTest centre or accompany you as a passenger, depending on the arrangement. SafePass offers road test packages that include use of our insured vehicle.

Pros and Cons of Using Your Own Car

Using your own car has advantages: you are already familiar with the vehicle, which can reduce test anxiety. However, if anything on the vehicle fails the pre-check, your test may be cancelled and you may forfeit your fee. Driving school vehicles are inspected regularly and meet all requirements by default.

  • Own car advantage: familiar vehicle, reduced anxiety
  • Own car risk: failed pre-check can forfeit your fee
  • Driving school car advantage: guaranteed roadworthy, no pre-check surprises
  • Driving school car advantage: often includes warm-up lesson before the test

What Happens If Your Car Fails the Pre-Check?

If the examiner determines your vehicle does not meet the requirements, the test will not proceed. Whether you lose your fee depends on why the vehicle was rejected. If the issue could have been identified before arrival, DriveTest may treat it as a no-show and the fee is forfeited. Inspect your car thoroughly the day before your test to avoid this situation.
